What even is a coaster anyway? Coaster Concepts

 For my coaster designs, I was stuck on eyes and stars. I really want to incorporate the eyes into my final design because they act as a literal reminder to the importance of "watching your drink". I also love eyes and stars as motifs in general and I'm really drawn to working with these shapes. Since a lot of my designs featured similar elements, I opted to include more of them to try lots of different ideas. 

The specific designs I am really excited about are #6, #15, and my overall concept of the "biblically accurate coaster". In my 6th design, I really like the star shape that extends beyond the round edges of the coaster that frames the eye. I am also drawn to the specific details I used for this eye overall. For #15, I like the nautical star combined with the eye. The nautical star is a symbol I have always loved for both its general meaning of guidance, luck, and safe passage home as well as its lesbian history from the 1940s. I think I would like to see how I could convert my other star coasters into nautical stars because of this design. Finally, I am really excited about my general concept for a "biblically accurate coaster". This name comes from the many eyes all over or around the coaster that are reminiscent of biblical angels. I think the idea of an angel using all its eyes to watch over and protect your drink in the form of a coaster is cool and sweet. I use this idea in sketches #7,#13, and #14.

Cow Summer Voxel Model

For the first week of OBDF 110, I created a voxel model of representative of my summer. I chose to model a cow to loosely represent my time working the Calgary Stampede in the GMC stadium. My cow is related to this as I was serving beer and coolers to guests during the entire rodeo and chuckwagon races all ten days. I was able to see many cattle and rodeo events that I hadn't had the chance to attend previously. I chose a cow as I felt a horse would be too difficult to model well with my current skillset. A cow's round body is much more forgiving. I assembled the body and head separately and moved them together with the gumball controls; gridsnap was enough to aid me in placing the cubes together accurately. I found navigating the program clunky and unnatural at first, however, by the end of the model I was much more comfortable adding voxels and placing them around the plane.

Castle Model Final Reflection & Renders

During the critique, a common suggestion I received was to add more windows as there were blank walls in my original model. I agreed with this strongly and focused on adding more detail into my design. Originally, it was suggested to add windows protruding out from the sides of the roof as well, but after adding my side windows I worried this would make the design too busy. Another critique I used was adding an environment around the castle. This inspired me to add the tree and the shrubbery. I added a base to ground the model that was inspired by bases used for mini figurines. There was material in my concept but I feel as though I expanded upon this by playing with grass textures to create my shrubs as well as combing 3D and 2D texture on the castle door. I found a lot of difficulty hollowing out my castle to make my windows functional as I did this late in the process. I would do this first next time.
